Mental Health Awareness Month is hosted by Leah at Uncorked Thoughts and Ula at Blog of Erised. It is a bookish event aimed at spreading awareness and discussing mental health, which many remain silent on, overlooked, stigmatized, and often have debilitating impacts. Welcome to my second post for Mental Health Awareness Month!
According to Wikipedia, autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior.
I am featuring three books that portray the mind of young boys with autism:
Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend by Mathew Dick is a story that completely entranced me. My heart just melted! It is sweet and heartwarming tale of friendship, and it has an honest voice ... and there's the rub: it's all told by Budo, Max's imaginary friend.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon is a mystery-of-sorts, where 15-year-old savant Christopher tries to figure out who killed the neighbour's dog. He goes around investigating like his idol Sherlock Holmes and in the process, he discovers the disturbing truth behind his mother's "death." The storyline is interspersed with interesting trivia, diagrams and drawings galore, and lots of Mensa-like problems, all told from Christopher's viewpoint.
Colin Fischer by Ashley Edward Miller & Zack Stentz is a middle-grade book which involves a mystery about an exploding cake! The book alternates between a few pages from Colin's diary entries and the mystery he must solve. As each chapter open with a diary entry, each page also gives us a glimpse into how Colin's mind works -- he is brilliant, caring, insightful -- just like his heroes Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Spock.
